Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Classes

Our small-group classes focus on moving, breathing, stretching, strengthening, and resting with awareness, and using these practices as a way to reconnect with ourselves in the present moment. Using a Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY) approach, this class provides an opportunity for us to safely explore the connection to the body, making choices with shape and movement in the body, and cultivating curiosity about physical sensations of being in the here and now. These classes will move at a gentle pace and no yoga experience is necessary. This class is ideal for anyone needing to recover from day-to-day stress as well as for those who may be dealing with anxiety or trauma symptoms. Frequently Asked Questions about TSY

Here are some things to know about Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TSY) classes at Hope Roots to help you feel more prepared for your first visit.

  • What is TSY? TSY incorporates movement, breathing, and rest and is facilitated with the intention to support participants’ safety in their body and the environment. The focus of the class is also not about processing trauma, rather it is about building safe connection with ourselves through slowing down, being curious about our internal experience and making choices for our bodies based on our own experience.

  • Who is TSY for? TSY is for everyone, not only those who have trauma diagnoses. TSY is good for anyone who is experiencing stress and may benefit from building a connection with themselves and their bodies, supporting their regulation skills, or increase their connection to the here and now.

  • How is TSY different than other yoga classes? The focus of a TSY class in on the internal experience (how things feel, tapping into my body’s intuition) versus the external experience (getting the movements right, doing exactly what the facilitator does) of the student. The facilitator will offer choices and options, but support the participant in making their own choices. TSY also does not used any kind of hands on adjustments or assists, but rather gives participants the opportunity to be in charge of themselves and their own body.

  • Is TSY a type of therapy? It is important to note that TSY is not therapy or a substitute for therapy. If you find that difficult experiences are coming up for you during class, we’re happy to support you with referrals for therapeutic support in the community.

  • What do I need for class? It will be helpful for you to wear clothing that allows you to feel comfortable moving in. Hope Roots will provide yoga mats, blankets, blocks and other items to support the class. If you would like to bring your own please feel free to do so.

  • What should I know about my first class? The space will be open 15 minutes early for anyone who would like more time before getting started or to connect with the facilitator. We will start slowly with orienting to our internal experience including breathing or mindful practices, continue by integrating slow movements, and finish the class with rest.

  • Any other questions? Please feel free to ask. We hope this can be a space that feels welcoming, safe and open to all.
